History of RCA SoCal

The Roofing Contractor's Association of Southern California was established originally in 1940 as the Union Roofing Contractor's Association in order to counteract the growing weight of organized labor, and to attempt to clear up the chaos of prices and restrictions that existed even then. It was incorporated in 1950 as a non-profit corporation and the name changed to "Roofing Contractor's Association of Southern California, Inc.", and has grown from its eleven original founders to its present size.

The Association has been in the forefront since its inception. The first consulting service was founded in 1968 through the Roofing Industry Trust. The Roofing Inspection and Consulting Service offered its inspection services to architects, developers of tracts, commercial and industrial projects at an average cost of 1 1/2 cents per square foot of roof area, with a one hundred fifty dollar minimum fee.

Membership is comprised of Union Contractor Members, Non-Union Contractor Members and Associate Members (Suppliers, Manufacturers, Insurance Brokers and Law Firms). The Asociation is governed by an elected Board of Directors. A full-time Executive Director and staff are retained, as well as outside legal counsel.

The Association, like the Industry in Southern California, mirrors something of a family tree. Most members have long family or working relationships, or both. Current members, such as Coast, Eberhard, Owen-Pacific, San Marino, Sears, Supreme, Vance, Dunham & Myers, Pacific Coast, Reycrest, Ross & Barrows, Stone, Western-Pacific, on the contractor side alone, have either owners who worked together on the roof, two or more generations of memberships, blood or marriage family ties. A large number of foremen, superintendents and officers went through the labor-management apprenticeship program together. Firms such as A.L.L., Roofmaster, South Coast Shingle, Structural Materials, LTR, Owens-Corning, Manville, and Christian Company are old and valued Associate members.
